ADS Atmospheric Dive Suit
OceanWorks

Overview

The OceanWorks HARDSUIT™ is a one-atmosphere diving system—a wearable submersible that allows operators to descend to extreme depths while maintaining full mobility, clear communication, and without the need for decompression. Our collaboration focused on evolving the suit’s design language, enhancing usability, and elevating its visual presence to match its cutting-edge technical performance. While the underlying mechanical and life-support systems were already highly advanced, the external form had remained largely unchanged over years of incremental upgrades. Our goal was to bring the suit into the modern era—creating a visual identity that conveys power, capability, and precision, while also improving operational efficiency for pilots.

The Challenge

The HARDSUIT™ Quantum II had already proven itself in military and commercial applications, offering unparalleled one-person submersible capability, including full vertical movement and dives to depths of 350 meters. However, the external appearance did not communicate the advanced capabilities of the system. The challenge was to modernize the suit’s aesthetics while supporting its rigorous functional requirements: high-pressure tolerance, maneuverability in tight spaces, and impact protection.

Compact & Ergonomic Architecture

The updated geometry makes the suit more compact, reducing operational bulk without compromising protective capability. Pilots experience improved freedom of movement and can navigate tighter underwater environments more intuitively. The streamlined form also allows easier transport and deployment, which is critical for both naval and commercial operations.

Modernized Form Language

We introduced a design language inspired by high-performance automotive and aerospace aesthetics. Key cues—air intake and exhaust-inspired contours, reflective limb panels for enhanced proprioception, and balanced geometric proportions—convey a sense of capability and precision. The updated exterior communicates the advanced engineering within, signaling the suit’s sophistication to operators and observers alike.

Protective Flubber Armor

Limbs were clad in durable urethane “flubber” sections, providing impact protection against underwater obstacles. These protective surfaces maintain mobility while safeguarding the pilot and the suit itself, reinforcing the system’s reliability in challenging conditions.

Pressure-Resilient Engineering

Given the extreme depths the HARDSUIT™ operates in, structural geometry was carefully optimized to withstand immense underwater pressures. Seamless transitions and rounded forms help distribute stress, ensuring safety and reliability for the pilot while maintaining a visually clean and modern silhouette.

Performance & Impact

The redesigned HARDSUIT™ Quantum II elevates the suit from a purely functional tool to a visually coherant, high-performance system. Key outcomes include:

Modernized, dynamic aesthetic that aligns with the suit’s technical excellence
•  Enhanced operational ergonomics and pilot mobility
•  Increased durability and impact protection
Compact form factor for easier deployment and maneuverability

The updated design supports OceanWorks’ mission of providing the Italian Navy and other operators with reliable, cutting-edge diving technology, combining industrial robustness with modern design sophistication.
