Creating the Future of Cell Therapies
Cell Squeeze® technology has the potential to underpin a new generation of cell therapies by expanding the therapeutic possibilities of intracellular delivery, while streamlining the anticipated production time, costs and logistics for greater accessibility.
For over a decade Form3 have supported Stemcell Technologies Industrial Design efforts, helping to drive innovation, overcome stringent manufacturing constraints, and accurately meet cost targets.
This flagship device houses their proprietary Cell Squeeze ® technology; a pioneering science that effectively delivers a variety of therapeutic cargo to cells at scale while preserving cell function, thus opening opportunities to generate new classes of cell therapies across oncology, autoimmune and infectious diseases.
The Cell Squeeze Technology
Cell therapies require precise and versatile biological engineering at scale to generate effective and accessible products. Our proprietary Cell Squeeze® technology relies on temporarily disrupting the cell membrane to deliver a variety of therapeutic cargoes while preserving cell health and function. Our technology allows for efficient, rapid and scalable intracellular delivery at a processing rate of over 10 billion cells per minute.
The CellPore Device
At the heart of our industrial design efforts for Stemcell Technologies was a commitment to a device that was easy to operate and maintain, safe, and sensitive to manufacturing costs.
To achieve this, we focused on three key factors: form & ergonomics, user experience, and our extensive knowledge of materials and processes.
The CellPore unit was designed to be easily operated within a biosafety cabinet, with a form factor that allowed for easy lifting and quick removal from the cabinets portal. We limited the possibility for finger traps by introducing a safety shield around moving parts. Further, large corner radii help reduce sleeve snag when reaching past the unit.
In addition, we discretely housed the gas cylinder within the side of the unit for easy accessibility, and included a maintenance hatch on the back. The devices HD touchscreen display provides technicians with statistical data and feedback, as well as allowing for easy control of the devices mechanical elements.
Cleanability is an essential feature within a lab setting where potential spillages and contaminants are common place. Form3 addressed this with a simple and timeless sheet metal housing and machined aluminum peripherals. This was all underpinned by strict manufacturing cost targets, requiring us to draw on our years of design experience to find creative solutions.
In summary, our design team successfully created a product that met the manufacturing and business goals of Stemcell Technologies. Our approach prioritized the needs and safety of the technicians who would be using the device on a daily basis, as well as the brand guidelines established by Form3 prior to this project. Our experience, commitment to high standards, and innovative approach have contributed to our long-term relationship with Stemcell Technologies, and we are thrilled to celebrate the success of their new CellPore device.
