STEMprep™ Tissue Dissociator
Stemcell Technologies

Overview

Tissue dissociation is one of the most variable and labor-intensive steps in cell research. It requires precision, consistency, and careful handling, yet in many labs it remains a manual, technique-dependent process that introduces variability, consumes valuable time, and increases user fatigue.

Form3 worked with STEMCELL Technologies to reimagine this workflow from the researcher’s perspective. The result is the STEMprep™ Tissue Dissociator; a modular benchtop system designed to reduce variability, simplify operation, and bring repeatability to a critical lab process. From intuitive touchscreen navigation to controlled temperature regulation and scalable module architecture, every interaction was designed to minimize cognitive load and hands-on time while maintaining precise mechanical performance.

The design balances scientific rigor with approachability: a compact footprint suited to dense lab environments, a clean and confident visual language aligned with clinical-grade reliability, and a system architecture that scales with research throughput.

By focusing on workflow clarity, ergonomic interaction, and modular expandability, the project transforms tissue dissociation from a manual skill into a standardized, repeatable experience—allowing researchers to focus on discovery rather than process.

visual brand consistency

The design of the STEMprep™ Tissue Dissociator aligns seamlessly with STEMCELL Technologies' established brand identity, using a consistent visual language that reflects clinical-grade reliability. Every detail, from color schemes to materials, was carefully considered to ensure that the product not only performs at a high standard but also communicates trustworthiness and professionalism in the lab.

Tailoring Form to Suit Application

The form of the STEMprep™ was tailored to the specific needs of the lab. Its compact size ensures it fits easily on crowded lab benches without compromising on functionality. The modular design offers flexibility to scale according to the evolving needs of research workflows, allowing for a seamless integration into various research environments.

Usability of Protective Doors Around Spindles

One of the key design challenges was ensuring the safety and usability of the protective doors around the spindles. The doors were designed not only to protect users but also to be easy to open, close, and clean, without impeding access to critical components. This thoughtful feature adds safety while maintaining ease of use during every step of operation.

Cleanability

Ease of cleaning was another priority. The STEMprep™ Tissue Dissociator was designed with smooth surfaces and removable components, ensuring quick and thorough cleaning between uses. This minimizes downtime, maximizes hygiene standards, and reduces maintenance effort in the lab.
